Discover is a major credit card brand offered primarily in the United States. It was launched by Sears in 1985 with the express purpose of providing an easier method for consumers to borrow money. When launched, Discover didn't charge an annual fee and provided a higher-than-usual credit limit, disruptive to the established credit card industry. A major player in the Canadian market, Discover is today one of the largest credit card providers.
The main attractions of the Discover card are low annual fees, an easy to use application process and variety of features, including flight insurance and travel rewards programs. The ease of the application process and selection of rewards makes it very attractive to most consumers. The Discover card is offered in North America, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Like many other issuers, there are some differences between the various regions.
American Express Blue Cash cardholders enjoy the benefits of zero-percent ARP on balance transfers, cash back bonuses, the first late payment fee and up to fifty percent reduction on your annual fees. On the downside, American Express does not offer protection against fraud. You may not be covered if you cash a Discover it credit card or if you cash through any other bank. There are no grace periods during which you can pay off your balance or avoid being assessed a late payment fee. Unlike other issuers, American Express does not provide a grace period for making payments when you don't meet your minimum payment or for going more than thirty days without making a payment.
Cash Back Credit Cards from Discover are often considered more effective than the American Express Blue Cash card because they offer higher cash back rates than the American Express does. You may however find that the American Express Card is more convenient to use in business settings. The Discover It card features categories such as airline miles, purchases at gas stations, department stores and top retailers. You also earn a five percent cash rebate on the items you purchase using the Discover It credit card.
You can use the Discover It Credit Card abroad. This card is only offered in certain countries. You will need to contact the banks in these countries to apply for a Discover It credit Card. This is different than the American Express Cards and you cannot use the Discover It abroad if you have an American Express credit card with a corresponding bank account. To use this card you need to use a debit/credit card and visa or master card to make purchases overseas.
Most importantly, you need to be careful with purchases. You should limit your purchases so that you do not incur any fees. If you find yourself with a high balance and low APR, you should transfer your balance to an introductory interest free offer card to bring your interest rate down. If you transfer your balances to another introductory offer card and if you pay the balance in full each month you can keep your low APR and have a low cost interest rate. When you make purchases, try to pay off the card as soon as possible to maximize the benefits of the Discover It Credit Card.
